Concerned Parent and Volunteer
It has been my privilege to have been selected by my Board of Education peers to serve alongside them on the Board for the past 2 years. In addition to being an active member of the Board I am also a parent who is 120% vested in the success of the Brookfield School District.
During my time on the Board of Education I have witnessed a tremendous deal of collaboration between the Boards of Finance, Selectman and Education. As a result, the recent downward budget trend has been reversed while being sensitive to the economic climate. In my experience, attaining responsible budgets serves not only the students but also the community in our town.
Part of this was made possible by negotiating contracts with unions that are reflective of challenging times we find ourselves in. One of my main objectives is to continue this effort with the Board of Education employees while communicating collaboratively with the Boards of Selectmen and FInance.
Another very exciting initiative for me was the Foreign Language program at the elementary level. From the moment I got on the Board, I was immediately in the forefront of this effort and aggressively advocated for this program. If elected, I pledge to continue to pursue its roll-out into the lower grades all the way down to Center School. I want to see our kids be well equipped, and be competitive with other school districts on the Global scale. I was also a supporter of improvements to our music program as well as the most recent iPad initiative for our High School freshmen.
I have chaired two sub-committees, and currently chair the Policy sub-committee, which was recently tasked with establishing objectives for our technology related policies and especially the anti-bullying policies.
While everyone uses the phrase "fiscal responsibility," for me, the bottom line is not always about the budget, but more so about the students — they are our future, and no one can argue with that, period.
